Sarojini Naidu, famously known as the “Nightingale of India,” was one of the most influential figures of India’s freedom movement. Growing up in an intellectually rich environment, Sarojini displayed exceptional talent from a young age.

She was a brilliant student and completed her matriculation at the age of twelve. Sarojini later travelled to England for higher education, studying at King’s College, London, and Girton College, Cambridge. During her time abroad, she developed a deep appreciation for literature, especially poetry, which later became her strongest medium of expression.

Sarojini Naidu gained international recognition as a poet through collections such as The Golden Threshold, The Bird of Time, and The Broken Wing. Her poetry beautifully captured Indian culture, traditions, emotions, and landscapes. Through lyrical language and vivid imagery, she introduced Indian themes to the Western literary world.

Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and other nationalist leaders, Sarojini Naidu actively joined the Indian freedom movement. She participated in major campaigns such as the Non-Cooperation Movement and Civil Disobedience Movement. Her speeches were known for their passion and clarity, motivating thousands to join the struggle for independence.

She achieved several historic milestones during her lifetime. Sarojini Naidu became the first Indian woman to serve as the President of the Indian National Congress in 1925. After independence, she was appointed as the first woman Governor of an Indian state, serving as the Governor of the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh).

Sarojini Naidu passed away on 2 March 1949. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of Indians, especially women, to participate actively in public life. She remains a symbol of courage, intellect, and artistic excellence, remembered both as a freedom fighter and a literary icon.
